Car Care Tips: Plan and Prepare

There will be a problem with your car, eventually. It could be something small like replacing a tail light, or something larger such as replacing the radiator. Knowing that things will break on the car is one thing, but preparing for these will keep you from dreading it when that time comes and the dent in your wallet will not be as large. The preparation requires discipline to build these practices into habits, but the money that you save will be worth it.
Cars have a bad tendency to start acting unusual at times when our budget just cannot handle it. The best way to prepare for this untimely breakdown is to have a fund only for car repairs. Financial advisor, Dave Ramsey, suggests that this amount be $1,000. Whatever the amount that you decide to set aside, it should not be touched unless it is a car emergency. Buying air fresheners and seat covers does not count as an emergency, however, replacing a dead battery does. By setting aside a little each month for that particular fund, you will have the money when you need it and your cash flow will remain steady.
Another good habit to develop is checking the owner’s manual for maintenance schedules. By regularly having the car checked, small leaks and funny sounds that hold potential for big problems can be caught before it gets too ugly. Some parts in the car also need to be replaced after a certain period of time or distance. If you know when you need to have a part, like the timing belt, replaced then you can prepare monetarily for it.
These are two simple habits that can keep you from getting into a very tight spot financially, and it takes pressure off of your mind. Develop these habits and take care of your car. It is worth it.
