Most of the time we don’t mind paying a little money driving through or going to a car wash, telling ourselves that the time saved is money saved. In many cases, this is true. However, by running our cars through the car wash, the exteriors of the cars begin to lose its luster and shine. Repairing or replacing the paint job on our cars can be very expensive. By setting aside time to properly take care of the car’s paint job will add years to the life of the paint and keep the car looking sharp and clean.
From About.com, here is how to properly wash your car:
1) Use the proper tools- a cotton or paint-safe microfiber washing mitt, a 5 gallon bucket and good cleaning products. About.com recommends these automotive specific cleaning product:- Mothers, Meguiars or Stoner
2) Rinse- During the rinse, you want to get off all the dirt and anything else that could potentially scratch the paint as you are washing it. Rinse extremely well!
3) Dry- This step prevents water spots from appearing on the car’s exterior. Auto-detailing professionals recommend any cloth that is 100% cotton.
4) Wax- This is the most important step in protecting your car’s paint and a “must” if you have just used a polish or cleaner. There are different kinds of wax one can buy. The type you settle on depends on the amount of time and money you have set aside to take care of your car.
Here are some final tips from About.com about washing your car:
Always start your project with the car out of direct sunlight. Make sure the paint is cool to the touch before applying any cleaning product or wax. Spray your car with ample amounts of water before washing. Use the water to spray off dirt and other contaminates that will scratch your car if you immediately start using a sponge and water first. Be sure to wash and rinse in sections so the car wash soap doesn’t dry before being washed off. Read the manufacturer’s directions on all car care products prior to use.
