Todd Johnson named InsTrust Agent of the Year

At the 2009 Smart Choice North Carolina Agents Meeting, Todd Johnson was named InsTrust Agent of the year. We sat down with Johnson to ask him a few questions about his career and his experience with InsTrust.
Answer: We offer the auto product, debit card product and warranty products [vehicle service contracts]. We have not begun marketing the warranty product yet. Within two to three months we hope to begin making that part of our presentation.
Q: How many InsTrust policies does your agency sell in an average month?
A: About 150 InsTrust auto policies a month. The auto product is our biggest InsTrust product.
Q: Why do you sell InsTrust products?
A: The reason we sell it is, it’s competitively priced, and it integrates with our management system. There’s unmatched compensation; customer service is good; and we have a good relationship with management. And we like the people there. A lot of it is the relationships.
Q: Do you have any advice for independent agents managing agencies in tough times?
A: What we’re finding to be a necessity is cross-selling and account-rounding. Diversifying what you offer to customers, stuff you haven’t been traditionally selling. If you’re just doing business as usual you’ll be out of business. We’re being proactive with our clients. We see what products we offer that they do not have. We have implemented a term-life product into what we offer. With two button clicks, we’re offering term life insurance to our customers. We present it as a necessity to them. That’s something we’re really big and strong on now.
Q: How does cross-selling help?
A: With our cross-selling, the more products we have with a customer, the more likely they are to stay with us. They’re going to be less likely to leave us if the price of car insurance goes up $25 or $30 for example.
Q: What are your most popular products?
A: Car insurance is the stronghold. Renter’s insurance and term life insurance are starting to get more popular.
